Overweight and obese children

This data shows the percentage of overweight and obese children in Buckinghamshire, as well as comparative data from the South East and England.

Children are considered to be overweight or obese if their Body Mass Index (BMI) is on or above the 85th centile. Because children are growing, the BMI which indicates whether they are overweight or obese adjusts according to age and sex.

The chart below looks specifically at children in Year 6 who are aged 10 and 11. It shows that one in three (31.5%) Year 6 children in Buckinghamshire were classified as overweight or obese in 2021/22.

This is significantly lower than the percentage of overweight and obese children in both the South East (34.0%) and England (37.8%) in 2021/22. No local data was collected in 2020/21 due to Covid-19 but it shows an increasing trend in all three geographical areas.
