Introduction
Charities, voluntary groups and social enterprises are integral to individuals and communities throughout Buckinghamshire. There are approximately 2,465 charities registered in Buckinghamshire (CharityBase, 2022) and 2,218 other civil society organisations (Community Impact Bucks, 2019) including social enterprises, voluntary groups, sports clubs and other ‘formal’ not for profits. It is hard to calculate the size of the the VCSE (Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise) sector because many voluntary organisations and community groups are not registered with the Charity Commission, and do not need to publish reports or accounts, making data collection difficult. Of the charities that are registered in Buckinghamshire, most are small with an income of under £100,000 per year. There are also more charities registered per 1,000 residents in Buckinghamshire compared to England as a whole.
Some of this data has been gathered from funders in Buckinghamshire including the Rothschild Foundation, Heart of Bucks, Leap, Fairhive (formerly VAHT) and Red Kite. The Bucks Data Exchange hopes to continue gathering data from other Buckinghamshire based funders, to improve our understanding of funding and the charitable sector in the county.
